ST. LOUIS - Recently, through a nomination made by Congressman
Dick Gephardt, the City of St. Louis was awarded $1,000 for its past and current efforts
to combat hunger and homelessness. The funds -- awarded by the Congressional Hunger
Center -- were then presented directly to the St. Louis Area Foodbank, our region's
largest hunger-relief organization providing nearly 12 million pounds of food each year
for the community in need.
"Every member
of Congress is given an opportunity to nominate organizations in their communities to
receive one the Victory Against Hunger Awards. I'm honored that the City of St.
Louis was chosen for an award this year," said Congressman Richard A. Gephardt (MO
3). "I applaud the efforts of the City's Department of Human Services and their
partner in the war on hunger, the St. Louis Area Foodbank. It is my hope that this
grant will assist them in their work with the community," Gephardt concluded.
The funds will go to
help the Foodbank's mission of feeding hungry people. Frank Finnegan, Executive
Director of the Foodbank stated, "Mayor Slay and his staff understand the importance
of making sure those in need are not forgotten and continually support our hunger-relief
efforts. This thousand-dollar-gift will be transformed into food for hundreds of
local people in need."
Mayor Francis G.
Slay said, "On behalf of the citizens of St. Louis, I want to thank Congressman
Richard A. Gephardt for nominating this program to receive the award. The City's
Department of Human Services is doing everything it can to fight hunger in St. Louis, and
this award reflects their great work."
